Here is the number game:

Let’s take an example of the following marking:

175/65 R14 84T

In the above mix of alphabets and numbers

  • ’175′ is the width of the car tyre in millimetres.
  • ’65′ is the height of the sidewall also known as aspect ratio.
  • ‘R’ denotes for the type of construction. In this case it is radial construction.
  • ’14′ is the diameter of the inner rim of the tyre in inches.
  • ’84′ is the maximum load a specific tyre can bear.
  • ‘T’ is the speed rating of the tyre. In this example the maximum speed of the tyre is 190 km/h.

Here is the detail explanation of why these decoded informations are essential:

Tyre Width

Width of the car tyre is the actual measurement of the tyre from side to side. This information is important because before buying a tyre you should know the width of the car as it plays an integral role in maintaining grip. If the width of the tyres are wider it provides better grip and also improves handling. On the other hand if the width is narrower it provides increased fuel efficiency but poor handling.

Aspect Ratio

Aspect ratio of the car tyre is the height of the tyre sidewall that is expressed in percentage of tyre width. If in case you need to change your car tyres from smaller to larger ones you need to change the height of the sidewall as well. This helps to prevent unwanted wheel alignment.

Tyre Construction

Specifications of the tyre construction helps you to know how the tyres were constructed. In the example given above tyres were constructed using body ply cords. These cords were then attached radially from one end to the other.

Wheel Diameter

Wheel diameter reveals the height of the actual wheel from one to the other. This is important to know so that the next time you buy tyres you know what tyre height can best fit to your car.

Load Capacity

Each car tyre has specific load capacity that can be supported in terms of luggage weight and amount of passengers. So one should be careful while dumping in luggage or squeezing more passengers. It is also known as load index.

Speed Rating

Speed rating are different for different tyres. This actually tells what is the maximum speed a specific tyre can sustain at full load.
